Those who are into modern art should visit the rare museum complex of Barcelona – the Picasso Museum, which was opened in March 1963. Then, the ancient mansion of the 14th century accepted almost all the early works of the artist. The noble work was initiated by a friend and secretary of the master Jaime Sabartes, presenting collection to the city of Barcelona.
Now, the Barcelona Museum of Picasso represents 3,5 thousand works. The first child’s pencil drawings, made under the supervision of his father, show the beginning of the master’s formation. The emerging style demonstrates works dated to the beginning of the 20th century. The works of the blue period show the chronology of the transformation of impressionism into primitive cubism. The pink period and the theme of the circus show progress towards cubism. The Meninas series, 1957, famous for the interpretation of Velasquez’s masterpiece, complement the extensive exposition.
Today the Picasso Museum is located in four Gothic mansions and occupies a quarter of artists on Moncada Street. Memorable interior courtyards of the mantions are occupied by museum gift shops and shops selling artists works of variety of techniques. Having bought their works at a modest price, one can be sure of the artistic value of the acquired thing. In 5-10 years the cost of work will grow at times.
The museum is located in the center of Barcelona, in the artistic quarter: Moncada Street Montcada 22, Museu Picasso. Nearest underground station: Jaime Jaime I.
